Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!): How to Plan Your Perfect Summer Vacation

J.J. Flynn (Pico Alexander) just graduated high school and is spending the summer working for his dad (Burns) at a swanky beach club. He wants a different kind of life, so he pals around with rich kids and dates a rich girl (whose main characteristics are vocal fry and rolling her eyes). J.J.'s cousin Terry (Amadeus Serafini), a wannabe singer-songwriter, is staying with J.J. for the summer, working for the next door neighbor, a single mom named Claudia (Susan Misner) who manages a small marina. Claudia's teenage daughter Winky (Rita Volk) is in a funk because her rich boyfriend blew her off, and she sulks as she wipes down the boats at the marina. Claudia encourages Terry, a hottie with perpetual bedroom eyes, to befriend Winky. Suzy (Caitlin Stasey) a local girl who "got out," returns for the summer, and discovers that her high school boyfriend Frankie (Anthony Ramos) has been pining for her all this time. Debbie (Lindsey Morgan) works at the beach club with J.J. and a tentative relationship forms. Debbie is confident, J.J. is not. Some of these arcs work better than others. One arc doesn't work at all (Terry is supposed to seem cool and free-spirited, but instead he comes off as self-involved and pushy.)

The film does not fetishize the period, although of course it shows up in the clothes, the cars, and most obviously the soundtrack, featuring Duran Duran, The Cure, Chaka Khan, The Go-Go's. Some of the needle drops are a little on the nose (Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues" makes an obligatory appearance), but they set the mood and also meld with the summery mood, which Burns captures, in the block party, the fireworks on the beach, sand between your toes, the look of early morning, the feel of a season of freedom before things get serious. Burns has been around for a long time at this point, following his opening splash with 1995's "The Brothers McMullen," made on almost no budget, with no big-name actors. He has continued to make films, with small budgets or even micro-budgets. His current series, "Bridge and Tunnel," taking place in the same period as "Summer Days, Summer Nights," was put on pause during Covid, but it is slated to return. Burns has grown as an actor and has settled into middle-age comfortably. He was born to play straight-talking dads, and he's very good here.

Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!)

Performance Worth Watching: Lindsey Morgan is brilliant here, giving her aspiring dancer Debbie a mischievous streak that aligns well with her cool Trans Am and the savvy that comes with a slightly older, slightly wiser woman enjoying her summertime fling with a greenhorn high school graduate.

Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) was a bit of a regression from the success of Today!, lapsing back into that distressing division between first-rate cuts and lightweight also-rans that characterized their pre-1965 albums. The difference is that the very best tracks were operating on a more sophisticated level than the 1962-1964 classics. "Help Me, Rhonda" was a number one single and would be their last Top 40 exercise in sheer fun for a while. More impressive was "California Girls," with its symphonic arrangement, glorious harmonies, and archetypal statement of Californian lifestyle. Subpar efforts like "Amusement Park U.S.A." and "Salt Lake City," throwbacks to the empty-headed summer filler of previous days, will disappoint. The answer song, "The Girl from New York City," and the cover, "Then I Kissed Her," are well done but don't break new ground. Yet a couple of cuts are among their most essential LP-only efforts. "Let Him Run Wild" is a soulful ballad with a great Brian Wilson falsetto vocal. "Girl Don't Tell Me," with its gorgeous melody, fine lead vocal debut from Carl Wilson, and subtle depiction of romantic rejection and disappointment, may be the best obscure pre-Pet Sounds Beach Boys track.

On the south shore of Long Island in the summer of 1982, a group of working-class teenagers and 20-somethings work their summer jobs, fall in and out of love, and wrestle with what the future holds when the summer ends and the real world beckons.

of all the richard linklater melty-days-of-summer imitations, this one at least reaches a little closer to the heights of a real proper hang-out vibe. burns is definitely capable of capturing some lovely sun soaked imagery, and the cast is all likeable and have the kind of chemistry that makes these kind of films work - in spite of the formulaic structure that surrounds it.

Set in 1983 Long Island, Summer Days, Summer Nights is a charming slice-of-life coming-of-age dramedy that attempts to replicate the freewheeling filmmaking style of award-winning director Richard Linklater. Purely an ensemble piece through and through, it collects various rising talent, some of whom like Anthony Ramos have blown up significantly since filming commenced. The plot boils down to a group of working-class teens and 20-somethings as they work summer jobs and contemplate their futures. My favorite character to follow was JJ (the adorable Pico Alexander), right on the cusp of adulthood as he lives out his final summer home while juggling work at the Beach Haven Beach Club.

How would you rank the novellas? What was your favorite and least favorite novella? Anything I mentioned that you want to discuss more about? What year was your best summer? ? Let me know below in the comments as I love hearing from you all ?

To celebrate the summer, Days of Summer Lights began on Tuesday, September 8 at 00:00 PDT (UTC-7) and concluded on Sunday, September 20 at 23:59 PDT (UTC-7) . TGC worked together with the community to bring this event.

Likeable, self-effacing and smart JJ, the writer, is probably modelled on Burns himself, who was also a teenager on Long Island in the 1980s. I suspect Burns shunted the action from the later 1980s, when he was 17/18, to 82 because that was really the last summer when you could make out in the back seat of a car without worrying about Aids. Innocent times, innocent film.

Summer Days and Summer Nights is a beautiful collection of twelve gorgeously romantic short stories, by some of the most talented and exciting YA authors writing today. Collected together by Stephanie Perkins, the editor behind My True Love Gave to Me, this wonderful collection of summer romances will delight all fans of YA. 2ff7e9595c
